I used to work in a mall while I was in college. I would get bored, so I would call the payphones out in front of the store I worked in just to mess with whoever would pick it up.
Another time I waited until the guy working at the shoe store across the way would step away from the counter, then call their phone and hang up before he could pick up. I did it for most of the day. He eventually figured out that it was me.
I never was very creative with my prank calls growing up. I remember one time we (myself and a friend of mine) called all the David Crockets in the book. Then asked if they were missing a coon skin hat, because we had found one.
